Why

'Why, Mr Trent,' returned Dick, 'there is a proverb which talks about being merry and wise. There are some people who can be merry and can't be wise, and some who can be wise (or think they can) and can't be merry. I'm one of the first sort. If the proverb's a good 'un, I supose it's better to keep to half of it than none; at all events, I'd rather be merry and not wise, than like you, neither one nor t'other.'

Why have apostrophes become so rare? Possibly because they discovered that in ancient Egyptian they could have a special meaning – something near akin to 'Well-beloved'. So a whole group of them have marched off to protest to the Great God of Grammar about being wasted all these years in the littleness of 'It's' and 'What's', or being subjected to the perils of possessiveness, when they could have been enjoying an equitable, two-way love affair with one of those other words...

It's not just a fork in the road; it's a »why« in the road, too.

Who knows why something happens? We might think we have the answer but my answer probably wouldn't be your answer and vice versa.

Why is the sky grey?
Why is my eye wet?
Why do I love you?

Why is a burning question
Why? Why?

Every sentence beginning with 'why' seems to be a question...

Why...

I have given up asking this question.
I know, there will be no answer that will make it easier for me.

I don't wanna know why I fell so desperately in love with you, why I feel so hungry for you, why I feel this craving for you – as if nothing else existed on this planet – only you – and the way your skin feels when I touch you, so much like home.

Or the way that every word you say sinks into
a deeper level of my mind, so that I feel closer to you every moment I share with you. Why do you change everything I felt ever sure of. I don't know.

I don't wanna know why I have been given this gift
of loving you.

I'm just grateful.

Why should I mention Io? Why indeed?
I have no notion why.
